PGH Transit is a personal Pittsburgh transit app run by Rohun Joseph. This version has no accounts: your home stop, your places and your settings stay on your device. Questions: rohun.joseph@gmail.com.

What leaves your device

To show times, weather and trips, the app's server asks these services on your behalf. Coordinates are rounded before they are sent; an address you type goes to Nominatim as typed. Nothing sent is tied to a name, an email address or a phone number.

  • Vercel: hosts the app and its server code. It sees each request's IP address and keeps request logs for a short time. Its runtime cache holds the answers described below.
  • Vercel Web Analytics: counts page views without cookies. It sees the page address and a hash of your request that changes daily, not who you are.
  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit (TrueTime): live arrival times and vehicle positions, asked for by stop and route: your home stop's id and the stops near your places, nothing about you.
  • Google Maps Platform (Routes API): trip shapes and walking times between your home stop and your places, with coordinates rounded to about 100 m.
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim: turns an address you type when adding a place into coordinates. The typed text is sent.
  • Open-Meteo: the forecast for your home stop's area, rounded to about 1 km.
  • National Weather Service (weather.gov): weather alerts for that rounded area.
  • Pirate Weather: minute-by-minute rain for a cell of about 5 km around that area, asked for only when rain is likely.

What our server keeps

Answers from these services are cached so the same question isn't asked twice: arrival times for minutes, weather for minutes to a day, trip shapes and walking times for a day (by rounded coordinates), and addresses you looked up for 30 days (by the typed text). Daily counts of calls keep the app within each service's limits; the per-visitor count stores a keyed hash of your IP address for at most a day, never the address itself. Nothing is stored about you as a person.

Data from the earlier version

If you had an account in the earlier version of PGH Transit, its data is still kept: your email address or mobile phone number, your saved places and settings, and your usage history. It sits in that version's database, which is paused, and in an offline backup, and nothing uses it while sign-in is away. The paused database is kept until about December 18, 2026 at the latest; when sign-in returns, your account moves to the new version. To have this data deleted sooner, request deletion of your account and associated data by emailing rohun.joseph@gmail.com. A deletion request removes this data from the offline backup along with the database.

Accounts and text messages

Sign-in returns in a later version, with an updated policy. Until then the app sends no text messages. We do not sell, rent, or share mobile phone numbers, or your consent to be contacted, with any third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. When sign-in returns, mobile numbers are used only for sign-in codes.
